Confidentiality
Confidentiality vs. Privacy
Most SAIC employees, including faculty members, cannot maintain confidentiality because of legally-imposed reporting obligations. In these circumstances, SAIC is committed to maintaining the privacy of the information shared. Confidentiality refers to a legal obligation not to disclose information without the express written permission of the individual who provided the information, with certain exceptions. See a full definition of confidentiality in the Policy. Privacy generally means that information related to a report will be shared with those SAIC employees who "need to know" in order to assist in the review, investigation, or resolution of the report.

Reporting Obligations
In August 2021, the Illinois Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act was amended to require institutions of higher education to conduct an annual anonymous campus sexual misconduct climate survey. The requirement was in response to other surveys that have found that 90-95% of survivors of sexual violence did not make a report to their institution following such an incident. The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) requires institutions of higher education in Illinois to conduct a sexual misconduct climate survey annually to comply with 110 ILCS 155/35. The survey is intended to help address sexual harassment and misconduct on campus. (Please see IBHE Campus Sexual Misconduct Survey Results.)
