Alum Spotlighted for Chicago-Focused Film
This week, the Chicago Sun-Times highlighted Jennifer Reeder (MFA 1996) for her work directing Signature Move, a cross-cultural lesbian romance based in Chicago. The movie centers on a Pakistani-American lawyer falling in love with a Mexican-American bookstore owner, weaving in tension between the lawyer and her conservative Pakistani mother who is unaware she is gay. Despite being a Chicago transplant, Reeder was determined to remain in the city after graduation instead of moving to a coast. That commitment served her well in making Signature Moves because she was able to elevate neighborhoods such as Pilsen and Rogers Park that go underrepresented in Chicago imagery. In celebration of alum Georgia O’Keeffe: My New Yorks opening current SAIC students were invited to submit artworks inspired by O’keeffe and the city of Chicago.
