Mathemetician Eugenia Cheng in conversation with PBSNewsHour

Eugenia Cheng Featured on PBS NewsHour

Lecturer and Scientist-in-Residence Eugenia Cheng (Liberal Arts) was featured in a segment for PBS NewsHour on re-thinking our cultural approach to math. Most teachers approach math from a utilitarian perspective with math as a sort of vegetable we have to swallow for a well-balanced education. Cheng proposes introducing math as creative, provocative, and fun—something on par with art or music. "Imagine if we only did math that was directly applicable, rather than stimulated by sheer curiosity," she explains. "We'd still be building houses by hand."
