Lecturer Links Polish History with Day Without a Woman Strike
On International Women’s Day, lecturer Magdalena Moskalewicz (Art History, Theory, and Criticism, Arts Administration and Policy) provided historical context for the global Day Without a Woman strike. In a feature for the Washington Post, Moskalewicz traces the roots of the strike to one held in Poland on October 3, the National Strike of Women known as “Black Monday.” Looking at some of the unique features of Polish feminism (a term she hesitates to use for historical and rhetorical reasons), she highlights the rise of feminist awareness amongst men and women in cities across the globe and ties Polish women’s fights to a broader solidarity struggle against gender oppression.
