SAIC Community Members in LA Press

Several SAIC alumni and affiliates were recently featured in the Los Angeles press for their presence on the west coast.

ArtNet included alum Marc LeBlanc (BFA 2003) in their coverage of Art LA Contemporary, an art fair in its eighth year. LeBlanc curated a program at a local theater in conjunction with the fair, featuring performance artists and filmmakers. ArtNet also included SAIC alum Martine Syms (BFA 2007) in its recent list of “8 LA-Based Emerging Artists to Keep on Your Radar.” Syms, ArtNet notes, is “one of the youngest participants of the Hammer Museum’s 'Made in LA' biennial.”

Theaster Gates (HON 2014) was featured by the Los Angeles Times twice in the same week. The newspaper first reviewed Theaster Gates’ self-titled show at Regen Projects. “The Chicago-based artist starts with the stuff he finds in his hometown,” writes the LA Times, “transforming worn-out fire hoses and the floorboards of basketball courts from shuttered public schools into large abstract paintings that seem to be haunted by ghosts—and all the more poignant for it.”

Later in the week, the LA Times published a Q&A with Theaster Gates. The LA Weekly also included Gates’ exhibition in their list of “5 Art Shows to See in L.A. This Week.”
