Faculty Member Collaborates with Comme des Garçons

Candida Alvarez, SAIC Professor in the Painting and Drawing department recently collaborated with avant-garde fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and her Comme des Garçons label for its autumn/winter 2017 menswear collections. Designs from Alvarez’s paintings are included on the dappled color-pop print of the Comme des Garçons Shirt collection, which Vogue refers to as “the Comme to wear.” And her brightly colored abstracted camo appears on some of the garments in the label’s Homme Plus collection. In an interview with FashionFiles, Alvarez details how the partnership came together. Alvarez's collaboration with the designer was also featured in an article on Women's Wear Daily.

Alvarez’s paintings will be on view for the first career survey exhibition of her work, Candida Alvarez opens April 29 at the Chicago Cultural Center. She was also one of 50 artists to be included on Newcity’s Art 50 list in 2016.
