Mijoo Kim's Photos Document a Dying Korean Tradition

New York-based photographer Mijoo Kim (BFA 2010) was featured on the Huffington Post for her work documenting Haenyo, the “sea women” of Korea. Deep-sea diving is a time-honored Korean tradition that dates back as far as the fifth century. By the 18th century, women dominated the field, but today, most of the divers are over 70 years old with no replacement prospects. Younger women have abandoned the small sea towns where Haenyo flourish for larger cities where they can pursue educations. Kim, herself Korean, dedicated herself to living alongside the Haenyo, documenting their experiences so their work might have a legacy.
