SAIC Recognized for “Excellence in Diversity”

SAIC received the 2016 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT into Diversity magazine, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, INSIGHT into Diversity magazine highlighted SAIC’s innovative diversity efforts, many of which unite the School with the larger Chicago community. On campus, the School’s Diversity Advisory Group (DAG)—formed in 2009—continues to work toward a culture that fosters inclusion in the classroom and welcomes new identities as they emerge. DAG’s 2016 initiatives to meet this commitment include:

  • DiversityEdu, an online diversity education program, will be rolled out for all students, faculty and staff during the fall term.
  • Continued partnership with the Chicago Freedom School to offer training workshops on campus including "Recognizing Identity, Power, and Oppression." To participate in one of these workshops, sign up here.
  • Partnership with the Office of the President and the Visiting Artists Program to present Claudia Rankine: President's Inaugural Distinguished Lecturer and related programs throughout the semester.
  • Lunch programs focused on inclusive classroom practices for faculty, addressing student diversity concerns, and a new series, Global Encounters, to inform and create dialogue around issues that transcend place and deepen our understanding of the world.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, SAIC will be featured in the November 2016 issue of INSIGHT into Diversity magazine. For more information about the 2016 HEED Award, visit www.insightintodiversity.com
