Theaster Gates Collaborates with SAIC Community for New Exhibition

SAIC Bill and Stephanie Sick Visiting Artist Theaster Gates conducted a "Black Artists’ Retreat" in August spanning two days. The product of this retreat, and works inspired by it, are currently being shown at the Valerie Carberry and Richard Gray galleries in the John Hancock Center through October 4, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. SAIC student Kelly Lloyd (Dual MFA and MA) and alum Tony Lewis (MFA 2012), who showed at the 2014 Whitney Biennial, are among the 10 artists who participated at the retreat and have their work on display at the exhibit. The exhibition catalog from "Retreat" will debut at EXPO Chicago, and will feature writings by SAIC faculty Romi Crawford (Visual and Critical Studies) and Hamza Walker (Painting and Drawing).
