Preserving Mary Nohl’s Legacy
SAIC alum Mary Nohl (MFA 1937), did not simply create works of art, she lived among them. From the 1960s to her death in 2001, Nohl built around her a home embedded with creations and adorned with sculptures on the shores of Lake Michigan. The artist’s cloistered and mysterious lifestyle acquired quite a strew of dark rumors from her neighbors but the result is a remarkable legacy. As Hyperallergic describes, “she re-envisioned the traditional concept of ‘home’ as a place of infinite creative potential–a place where personal history has solid authorship.” Years after her death their remains controversy over how to preserve her home which she left to the Kohler Foundation, a conservation agency that protects art environments.
