Ian Schneller Featured on Chicago Tonight

SAIC sculpture faculty member, Ian Schneller, was featured on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight for his work designing, making, and repairing stringed instruments, tube amplifiers, and audio horns. He discusses how his artistic formation at SAIC influences his craftsmanship. “I believe as designers and artists, the closer we can be to a physical understanding of the materials we are working with, the better work we can achieve,” says Schneller.

Schneller founded Specimen Products and the Chicago School of Guitar Making, offering classes and seminars on fine-tuned design, repair, care, and construction of these instruments. He speaks of the enjoyment he gets from walking younger generations through a tech-free, hands-on process that requires essential—though somewhat forgotten—woodshop skills.
