Chicago Tribune Features Design Studio of MFA Student Nick Butcher
The Chicago Tribune featured the collaborative art practice and print and design studio established by Nick Butcher (MFA 2015), a current student in Department of Printmedia at SAIC. Butcher established the studio, Sonnenzimmer, with his partner, Nadine Nakanishi. Sonnenzimmer has had an undeniable impact on the Chicago graphic design scene. The Chicago Tribune notes the design duo’s “unselfconscious, almost peaceful ability to blend the formality of graphic design—the practical side of posters and books and so forth—with the airiness of fine art and abstraction: muted pastoral colors and shapes intersecting with rigid typography.”
Notably, Sonnenzimmer designed posters for EXPO Chicago this past fall, and their impressive client base includes the Mies van der Rohe Society, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Newberry library, and singer Neko Case. Butcher’s collaborative design work has been collected by various institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago.
