LaToya Ruby Frazier Named as 2015 Infinity Award Winner
SAIC’s Department of Photography faculty member LaToya Ruby Frazier is one of eight winners of the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Awards. Frazier earned the award for the category of Publication with her book The Notion of Family, which visually explores the legacy of racism and economic decline in small-town America as embodied by her hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania. The work considers the impact of that decline on the community and on her family, as Frazier has compellingly set her story of three generations—her Grandma Ruby, her mother, and herself—against larger questions of civic belonging and responsibility.
Frazier will be honored alongside the other award winners at the gala event on Thursday, April 30, at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers, in New York City.
The Infinity Awards, which celebrate their 31st anniversary this year, claim alumni such as Berenice Abbott, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, David Guttenfelder, André Kertész, Karl Lagerfeld, Annie Leibovitz, Helen Levitt, Mary Ellen Mark, Susan Meiselas, Daido Moriyama, James Nachtwey, Gordon Parks, Jürgen Schadeberg, Malick Sidibé, and Ai Weiwei.
