Archibald Motley Exhibit Lauded in the Press

The Whitney Museum of American Art will be exhibiting the work of Archibald Motley (1914–18, HON 1980) in the upcoming show Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist. Motley was trained in classical European-based painting at SAIC and is one of the most important figures associated with the Harlem Renaissance. The New York Times applauds the exhibition for providing an alternative version of American modernism; one that uses American culture as its focus. An article in The Daily Beast highlights Motley’s role in portraying the African American experience. The exhibition toured five museums throughout the past year, including a five-month run at the Chicago Cultural Center.
