Alum Justus Harris Creates Diabetes Data Sculpture
Since graduating from SAIC, Justus Harris (BA 2013) has explored an interest in medicine through his experience living with type 1 diabetes, merging his fine arts background with technology. After participating in artificial pancreas studies at the University of Chicago, led by collaborator Dr. Elizabeth Littlejohn, Harris began using his blood glucose data to create 3D-printed sculptural objects or Diabetes Data Sculptures. The handheld objects become “tangible calendars of health,” according to Harris. Recently, he participated in a conference, DiabetesMine D-Data Exchange at Stanford University School of Medicine where his work was enthusiastically received, giving him the opportunity to meet with several companies who are interested in including more creative innovations in their design. His future plans include forming a LLC for conducting pilot studies with Littlejohn, and he is talking to Stanford and other various art institutions about organizing an international competition for medical design.
In celebration of alum Georgia O’Keeffe: My New Yorks opening current SAIC students were invited to submit artworks inspired by O’keeffe and the city of Chicago.
