Smart Museum Opens Monster Roster Exhibition

The Chicago Reader recently profiled the Monster Roster as part of the opening of the Smart Museum's Monster Roster: Existential Art in Postwar Chicago exhibition. The show focuses on the work of a group of Chicago artists that have been largely overlooked until recently. The story says that "Monster Roster" was coined by Franz Schulze (MFA 1950, HON 2014) to describe a group of artists who worked in an expressive, figurative style. The term was inspired by the Chicago Bears, often known as the Monsters of the Midway. The Monster Roster is comprised of many SAIC alumni, most prominently Leon Golub (BFA 1949, MFA 1950), who studied under SAIC alum and faculty member Kathleen Blackshear. The exhibition runs through June 12, 2016.
