Dread Scott Recreates NAACP Flag and Installs Outside Jack Shainman Gallery

SAIC alum Dread Scott (BFA 1989), who returned to campus earlier this year for a lecture on identity and art, recently made national headlines for a public installation he recreated in light of racialized police violence. “A Man Was Lynched By Police Yesterday” reads the flag Scott hung outside of New York’s Jack Shainman Gallery. According to The Huffington Post, “The work is an updated version of the memorable banner that hung outside the headquarters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) back in 1936."

In an email with the publication, Scott called the flag, “an unfortunately necessary update to the NAACP sign” and noted that its installation is “a real testament to the moment and courage of galleries like Jack Shainman that are shifting gears quickly to display work like this.”
