A painting from the More Than Lumpia exhibition by Abby Mendoza

WBEZ Interviews SAIC Alums Jimmy Bulosan and Abby Mendoza

Jimmy Bulosan (MA 2004) and Abby Mendoza (MA 2023) appear on the WBEZ program Reset with Saha-Ann Simons to discuss More than Lumpia, an exhibition that redefines the Filipino American identity through art. The show, held in The Catacombs at the Epiphany Center for the Arts through November 17, brings together several generations of Filipino-American artists and educators in an attempt to challenge the community’s stereotypical image, extending it beyond to the world-renowned staple of Filipino cuisine–lumpia.

Bulosan and Mendoza, alongside an array of other artists, address the issues of identity shaping, destigmatizing mental illness, and challenging colonial ideas of colorism under an overarching goal of amplifying the artistic voices of Filipino Americans.
