Ann Lui and Iker Gil
Designer Artist Citizen Site: Exploring Belonging will create an independent exhibition that responds to, expands, and challenges the U.S. Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, “Dimensions of Citizenship,” commissioned by SAIC and UChicago. During the course, students will be familiarized with the curatorial approach to U.S. Pavilion while focusing on developing their own critical position around citizenship, belonging, and space, through their individual practice in any area at the School. Supported by lectures and critiques from visiting artists and designers, students will open new conversations around citizenship: an urgent contemporary issue. This course will be followed by a mandatory study trip in summer 2018, during which students will install and present their work on site in Venice, Italy.
This course will produce a response exhibition to “Dimensions of Citizenship,” the US Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Students taking this course will be required to co-register in a 3 credit, 3 week study tour to the Venice Architecture Biennale in May/June 2018.
