CTL Teach and Tell: New Art City with Claire Fleming Staples

New Art City: A New Way to Explore Exhibition Design and Showcase Student Work

Claire Fleming Staples (Contemporary Practices) visited the CTL to lead a New Art City workshop. New Art City is an online platform that allows users to design and navigate virtual 3D worlds. Accessible and easy to use, New Art City makes it possible to exhibit work in conventional digital environments or more elaborate and fantastic game like environments. Attendees only needed an open imagination to participate. We think that New Art City might offer faculty an innovative and interactive platform for student to showcase their work in virtual worlds that compliment and expand their practice.

New Art City Workshop

Practical Applications

New Art City may be used as a platform for students to exhibit their work. Since it enables students to showcase a wide variety of pieces (e.g. paintings, photographs, and sound design), it provides them with the opportunity to extend their artistic practice into a medium that can augment their art objects in interesting and illuminating ways. Claire effortlessly showcased how the platform integrates with 3D CG technology, such as Blender. New Art City can also facilitate more collaborative projects and its portal feature enables students the opportunity to transport from one gallery space to another.

Next Steps

Currently, Contemporary Practices provides students with access to New Art City. SAIC does not have a school-wide license to New Art City, but the CTL would welcome feedback about the platform so that we can explore options to make it more readily available.

Thank You!

We are very grateful that Claire took time to lead this workshop. Thank you, Claire! We encourage faculty who may wish to lead a similar workshop to contact us. The call for CTL Teach and Tell workshops will be released near the end of the spring semester.
