Virtual Studio Preview Workshop Day

You have been selected to attend a special three-hour workshop at the nation’s most influential art and design school! This workshop will give you a chance to immerse yourself in an SAIC class, and to find out firsthand why we would be a perfect fit for you.
Get a hands-on experience working with our renowned faculty in the workshop of your choice—from Abstraction, Mixed Media, or Interior Architecture to Photography, Figure Drawing, Comics Making, and more. You will also walk away from this experience with a piece you’ve created in our SAIC studio.
Workshop Options:

Imagine the possibilities that can be created when you take something – an item, a concept, the written word – and transform it into something entirely different. Whether your interests live in or outside the world of design, you’ll learn how to identify unique solutions to your creative challenges. With tools and materials you already have available to you, you’ll be working through a series of exercises – from drawing to combining materials and forms – to push the boundaries of the way you make. We guarantee that you’ll surprise yourself!
Supplies:
-Mark-Making Tool (pencil, pen, paint brush, or Adobe Illustrator)
-Unlined Paper of at least 8.5” x 11” (letter)
-Construction Paper (or the like, something that with some stiffness)
-Paint (acrylic, watercolor, etc.)
-Scissors or Xacto knife
-Shoe box (any box that can be easily cut)
-Household items (string, aluminum, foil, sponges, plastic cups, paper plates/bowls)

Break free of traditional ideas and media to discover new and experimental mediums and techniques. Scour the kitchen, the back of your closet, or the space outside your front door with an eye for how you can push materials and concepts. We’ll be showing you how to think differently about mark-making and form building, and you’ll leave with new skills that you can apply to the work you currently make. You’ll also be inspired by the variety of artists we’ll introduce you to whose work questions what is normal and pushes us to think beyond the ordinary.
Supplies:
-Paint-like materials (food coloring, ketchup, mustard, mustard, oil, spices, milk, juices, dirt, hair dye, water, coffee, tea, chocolate, eggs + water + vinegar , acrylic paint, watercolor, etc.)
-Mark making materials (knives, forks, skewers, sticks, chopsticks, pens, pencils, charcoal, toothbrush, paint brush, cotton pads, paper towels, markers, crayons, hole punch, stapler, push pin, needle, etc.)
-Canvas/Paper like surfaces (printer paper, paper towels, paper napkins, cloth napkins, tablecloths, old bedsheets, old t-shirts, cardboard, bubblewrap, aluminum foil, cereal boxes, wax paper, shower curtains, window blinds, cotton pads, etc.)
-Sculptural materials (flour + water + salt, soap, fruit, vegetables, cardboard, etc)

In this hands-on workshop you'll scratch pencils, sling ink, and slay the proverbial narrative dragon with all the new arrows in your cartooning quiver. In addition to practical demos, you'll see examples of unique mini-comics and zines, and examine how format and function work hand in hand. You’ll be pushed to dig deeper into stories you’ve imagined in the past and pull out new dynamic ideas. Along with learning cartooning basics, you'll be able to incorporate other materials and produce a finished work.
Supplies:
-Ruler or straight-edge
-Pencil
-Eraser
-5 - 10 Sheets of Paper (any kind)
-Other drawing tools such as markers, pens,charcoal, brush and ink, etc.
-Circular object (cup, mug, roll of tape, lid, etc.) must fit on your paper
-White Out, white paint, or white gel pen

From decorative pastime to countercultural rallying cry, collage has a long and multifaceted history in art and craft. You will be exploring introductory material and technical approaches to making abstract compositions in cut and glued paper, and will be experimenting, playing, cutting, tearing, and remixing to your heart’s content. We will end with an informal presentation of our creations and a brief and highly incomplete lecture on collage from the 19th to the 21st century.
Supplies:
-Scissors and/or Xacto knife
-Paper or board - printer paper or cardboard are fine
-Old magazines, junk mail, wrapping paper, etc
-A scrap piece of plywood or thick cardboard as a work surface - this will get scratched/cut up/etc
-Something to draw with - pencil, chalk, sharpie, anything
-Glue stick, masking tape, and/or and/or any tape you have
