Nicole Seisler's practice is part of a hybrid movement emerging from ceramics in which materiality and temporality are grounds for a conceptual framework. Seisler embraces the haptic qualities of clay and uses other malleable materials—such as plaster, chalk, rain, snow, and leaves—as connective tissue between herself, her studio, public spaces, and communities. Seisler's work often manifests itself as ephemeral public interventions that absorb and erode in a manner of days, weeks, or months; in other instances, the work exists as an organized event for a specific duration. Her work is at once sculptural, site-responsive, performative, participatory, and strongly linked to social practice. Seisler directly engages others in her process, often positioning herself as facilitator in order to question authorship and to blur the overlapping roles of artist/viewer/participant/collaborator.
