Nancy Murphy Spicer

Bio

Nancy Murphy Spicer’s work is centered in painting and drawing and its relationship to social, architectural, and geographic space. It takes the form of works on paper, paintings, installations, and performance.

Murphy Spicer has exhibited her work at galleries and museums in the US and in Europe. Her work has been reviewed and highlighted in Sculpture Magazine, Art New England, Der Tagesspiegel Berlin, and Art Papers. The Boston Globe has twice named her exhibitions among the top 10 shows in Boston.

Murphy Spicer teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Continuing Studies Department. She has also taught art at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of the West of England. She has lectured at many art institutions including the Museum School Boston and Camberwell School of Art London.

She completed a mid-career MFA degree at SAIC with an exhibition of paintings and a written thesis entitled The New Brag: Erasure and Co-Constitution of Self. Paintings from The New Brag series were selected to be included in New American Paintings MFA Annual Vol 141. Her essay on the work of Cy Twombly is included in the book accompanying the Art Institute of Chicago exhibition entitled Material Meanings: Selections from the Constance R. Caplan Collection.

Murphy Spicer’s work is held in private collections in the US, UK, Germany, and Japan.

Murphy Spicer also coaches women artists and entrepreneurs and hosts Women Artists Connect, an online network where women artists meetup and share ideas and support.

Feeling like you've lost your studio groove? Wish you could start a solid studio practice? Maybe you cant get to your studio or you've fashioned one within your home but its not quite working? Join with other artists who feel similarly and support one another in getting back on track and vibrant again.

In this class, well look at what it takes to build a solid, ongoing studio practice. You'll gather with other artists and go through a series of steps that will have you designing an ideal space within your home and/or working out best practices for your outside studio. You'll revive your drawing practice and learn new strategies for researching artists and getting inspired by their work. You'll learn some practical tips for keeping your studio work in a flow rather than being stalled. Finally, you'll get ideas for how to get your work out into the world.

Your instructor has maintained a consistent studio practice for 25 years and is ready to share her successful strategies with you. Make this time one of rich and generative studio progress.
