Alum Selva Aparicio Presents Capstone Exhibition at International Museum of Surgical Science

Selva Aparicio’s (BFA 2015) solo exhibition Hysteria is on display at the International Museum of Surgical Science (IMSS) through January 17, 2021. Aparicio’s new work, which opened in conversation with the collections at IMSS on October 16, focuses on the implicit gender, race, and power dynamics in medicine. Her pieces explore conflict, pain, and resolution, and their relation to womanhood—particularly through the lens of the gynecological field.

Hysteria is Aparicio’s capstone exhibition as the museum’s spring 2020 artist-in-residence, a six-month-long residency session. Located in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, IMSS is “North America’s only museum devoted to surgery,” and offers only two residences a year to artists of all mediums.

An accomplished installation, sculpture, and performance artist whose work “digs deeper into ideas of memory, death, intimacy, and mourning,” Aparicio was named by Newcity as one of this year’s Breakout Artists, alongside seven other School of the Art Institute of Chicago community members.
