Alum Trevor Paglen’s Artificial Intelligence Work Profiled in Wall Street Journal

According to the Wall Street Journal, Trevor Paglen (MFA 2002) is “putting the art in artificial intelligence” (AI). In September, the multimedia artist chatted with the journal about his AI-focused work and the human consequences of algorithms.

Paglen’s work explored the complicated history of AI at two recent exhibitions. Bloom at Pace Gallery in London and Opposing Geometries at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh both examine the surreal—and often discriminatory—practices behind facial recognition techniques, causing audiences to speculate “where reality ends and a computer’s vision begins.”
