Charly Palmer Depicts Black Love for Time Magazine Cover

For their July 6 issue, Time magazine commissioned Atlanta artist Charly Palmer (SAIC 1980-82) to design a cover that questioned whether Americans will see their country live up to its promise. The 40-by-30-inch acrylic painting titled, "In Her Eyes," depicts a girl in profile set against a cerulean cityscape, rising above a bed of blood-dripped pink roses as faded stars and stripes frame her face. Palmer—whose past commissions include the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, cover art for John Legend's album Bigger Love, and the Green Bay Packers—explained, "For the past 25 years, I have been on a mission through my art to sound the alarm. I hope that this cover reflects that concern. My message is not white hate. It is resounding Black love."
