Dread Scott (BFA 1989)

Dread Scott's Latest Project Featured in Vanity Fair

In November 2019, Dread Scott (BFA 1989), will reveal Slave Rebellion Reenactment, a march and performance tracing the largest slave revolt in American history. Featured in Vanity Fair, Scott has invited strangers, volunteers, and reenactors to echo the unified spirit of the 1811 German Coast uprising. In the article, Scott states, “If the people embodying this history have walked in the shoes of their ancestors, and thought about freedom and emancipation in new ways, that’s enough.” Accompanying the participants is a film crew of the British film director, John Akomfrah. The 26-mile march will begin in LaPlace, Louisiana, and conclude at the Congo Square in New Orleans, where musicians will honor the collective resistance of slaves from West Africa, Louisiana, and the French Caribbean.
