Museum of Arts and Design Presents Exhibit on Roger Brown

The first solo museum show in New York devoted to the work of Roger Brown (BFA 1968, MFA 1970) debuted at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). Roger Brown: Virtual Still Lifes, curated by Shannon Stratton (MFA 2003, MA 2008), features works made in the final years of the artist's life that combined his passion for collecting with his groundbreaking approach to painting. "Roger Brown is a historically significant figure in American painting," said Shannon R. Stratton, exhibition curator and former MAD William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator, "whose signature style of ominous weather, patterned landscapes, omnipotent points of view, and nods to the theatrical make for a nuanced critique of the artificiality of post-war American culture," reports Broadway World. The exhibition includes Ellen Sandor (MFA 1975, HON 2014) and (art)n's PHSCologram portrait of Roger Brown. On view through September 15, the exhibition will feature a two-day symposium on the artist's work and career on September 7–8.

In conjunction with the exhibition MAD will host a two-day symposium focused on the artist’s work and career on September 7–8, 2019. The limited edition book, Roger Brown: Virtual Still Lifes, edited by Stratton and published in collaboration with SAIC—with essays by Assistant Professor Giovanni Aloi, Stratton, Lisa Stone (MS 1998), Lisa Wainwright, and Lydia Yee, and designed by Sonia Yoon—will be released at this event. the symposium will include film screenings, lectures, and tours of the exhibition.
