SAIC Alum Malvika Bajaj Saini's Conservation Project Featured in the Indian Express

Conservation architect at the Architectural Heritage Division of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and alum Malvika Bajaj Saini (MS 2000) was part of a team working on a pilot conservation project in the weaver cluster of Chanderi, India. When Saini asked Abdul Mubeen a resident of Chanderi, if he would like to have his home repaired, he knew she was more than a passing tourist, reports the Indian Express.

INTACH proposed a nomination of several world-famous sari weaving centers across India to draw attention to the tangible heritage of weavers’ homes in towns like Chanderi. Of the town's 30,000, more than 18,000 are engaged in weaving. "Weaving here is a household and sometimes a community craft, where spaces within homes become active with the multiple processes of making a sari," says the publication.
