Thorsten Trimpop Named 2019 Guggenheim Fellow

Assistant Professor Thorsten Trimpop (Film, Video, New Media, and Animation) was named a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants in the foundation’s 95th competition.

Trimpop’s films explore the many ways cultural, political, and ecological histories are borne by individuals in their daily lives. His most recent feature, Furusato, exposes the devastating effects of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant meltdown on the surrounding landscape and its inhabitants. The film was shown at dozens of festivals and won the grand prize at DOK Leipzig. He is currently working on a new, genre-blurring feature grounded in a true crime story that sparks a dual narrative about our colonial inheritance and the human obsession with beauty.

In addition, three alums were also awarded fellowships from the foundation. Yevgeniya Baras (Post-Bac 2005, MFA 2007), Sean Buckelew (BFA 2009), and Matthew Mazzotta (BFA 2001) were named 2019 Guggenheim Fellows in the Creative Arts category.
