Romi Crawford Receives the 2018 Jean Goldman Book Prize

SAIC Professor Romi Crawford (Liberal Arts, Visual and Critical Studies, Art History, Theory, and Criticism) was awarded the 2018 Jean Goldman Book Prize for her work coediting the book The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago. The annual prize is awarded to the most outstanding publication by a faculty member teaching in SAIC’s Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism and was presented by SAIC’s President Elissa Tenny and James Rondeau, Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, on November 29. 

The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago is an in-depth look at the history of the revolutionary mural created by the Organization of Black American Culture on the South Side of Chicago. The mural, which was unveiled to national critical acclaim in 1967, was at the heart of the Black Arts Movement in the United States and featured portraits of John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and W. E. B. Du Bois among others.
