EXPO CHICAGO's Interview Marathon Featured SAIC Faculty and Alums

This year’s EXPO CHICAGO featured interviews with SAIC faculty and alums on September 29 as part of Creative Chicago: An Interview Marathon. The interviews were led by art curator, critic, and artistic director at the Serpentine Galleries, Hans Ulrich Obrist. During this five-hour series of interviews Obrist paired artists who had never met before and asked them to answer questions about the future of Chicago’s art scene.

The conversation between artists operated as “part performance art, part seemingly never-ending talk show, part stunt and part sincere inquiry: Can you locate the soul of a place though a long day of conversation?,” according to the Chicago Tribune. Obrist told the newspaper that he chose Chicago for this event because SAIC is home to a large archive of his interviews and because Chicago broadcaster Studs Terkel is of great influence to him. SAIC faculty and alums interviewed by Obrist included Professor in the Visual and Critical Studies department Joseph Grigely, Lecturer in the Contemporary Practices department Edra Soto (MFA 2000), Bill and Stephanie Sick Distinguished Visiting Professor Amanda Williams, Art Green (BFA 1965, HON 2016), Gerald Williams (BFA 1951), Suellen Rocca (BFA 1964, HON 2016), Richard Hunt (BA 1957, HON 1979), Stanley Tigerman (HON 2018), Jeanne Gang (HON 2013), and Theaster Gates (HON 2014).
