Irving Petlin's Artwork Reviewed by Hyperallergic

Hyperallergic recently profiled artist Irving Petlin (BFA 1956) and his solo exhibition, A Tribute to Irving Petlin, at the National Arts Club in New York City. Petlin studied at SAIC around the same time as Monster Roster artists Leon Golub (BFA 1949, MFA 1950, HON 1982) and Nancy Spero (BFA 1949, HON 1991), and he was the youngest artist to be included in last year's exhibit Monster Roster: Existentialist Art in Postwar Chicago at the Smart Museum of the University of Chicago. But Petlin's approach was markedly different from his contemporaries. "Petlin is committed to being a witness to history, but he does not make overtly political art, as did his friends Golub and Spero," relates the article.

"Whatever your life story, it is part of a larger history— this is what Petlin recognizes and is perhaps why he suppresses the personal or anecdotal: he feels there is a bigger story to tell." Read the full write-up here.
