Tania Bruguera's Directorial Debut Featured in the Guardian
A life spent speaking truth to power and seismic changes in political order have led SAIC alum Tanya Bruguera (MFA 2001, HON 2016) to direct her first play at the Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória in Portugal as part of the Biennial of Contemporary Arts. The performance, a rendition of Samuel Beckett's Endgame, augments the play's notorious incomprehensibility into a treatise on relationships to power.
"It's a story of how one person can intervene in someone else's mind," says Bruguera, who was detained by Cuban authorities in 2014 for her installation piece Tatlin's Whisper #5 and who also plans to run for President of Cuba in 2018. "Maybe I see the piece as a revenge against totalitarian dictators—the person who is in power only has power as long as the person serving decides to serve."
