In Memorium: Barbara DeGenevieve

Boundary-pushing artist and Chair of SAIC’s Photography Department, Barbara DeGenevieve, lost a battle with cancer, passing away on August 9 at the age of 67. Her life and work were recently given a serious, appreciative look by author and writer Susan Silas on Hyperallergic. A well-loved professor at SAIC for nearly 20 years, DeGenevieve was devoted to her students, and her "genuinely transgressive" work, says Silas, may have made her “underrecognized as an artist.” Lisa Wainwright, SAIC's Dean of Faculty, said, "Barbara had such a strong will to be heard—she was provocative, progressive, unafraid, and unabashed in the most amazing ways. Her practice was always grounded in central questions of power, class and sexuality, and her work and actions were always statements about artistic liberty. She was brave—one of the best."
