SAIC Alum Rescues a Century-Old Letterpress Business
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently talked to SAIC alum, Ashley Town (MFA 2014), about her new business, Bay View Printing Co. The company, specializing in letterpress, was about to shutter after 30 years in business, until Town left her job to rescue the vintage print shop. She said she fell in love with the company while getting prints for clients as an apprentice at the shop. "It's a love of ink and paper and typography," says Town. "I absolutely couldn't let that tradition and that craft die." Town is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds to rehabilitate the shop, located in a building that was previously a Pentecostal church.
In celebration of alum Georgia O’Keeffe: My New Yorks opening current SAIC students were invited to submit artworks inspired by O’keeffe and the city of Chicago.
