A New Graduate Student Scholarship Has Been Created in Memory of Barbara DeGenevieve

Daniel Berger, a member of SAIC’s Board of Governors, established a new scholarship in memory of the late Barbara DeGenevieve. The Daniel Berger Barbara DeGenevieve Graduate Merit Scholarship Fund will provide scholarship money to a graduate student in the Department of Photography.

A respected SAIC faculty member for more than 20 years, DeGenevieve left behind a bold artistic legacy and career of excellence in teaching. She served as the Chair of the Department of Photography for more than a decade, took on institutional roles on numerous committees from the Faculty Senate to the Diversity Committee, and served as the Graduate Division Chair.

DeGenevieve was both an agent for freedom of expression and an advocate for students’ rights and their success in professional practice. “Barbara had such a strong will to be heard—she was provocative, progressive, unafraid, and unabashed in the most amazing ways,” says Lisa Wainwright, SAIC’s Dean of Faculty. “Her practice was always grounded in central questions of power, class, and sexuality, and her work and actions were always statements about artistic liberty. She was brave—one of the best.”
