Thomas Kong's Entry Recognized in Next Helsinki International Architecture Competition
SAIC Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects Faculty Member Thomas Kong has been recognized for his entry to the Next Helsinki international architecture competition. The competition, launched as an alternative to the controversial Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition, called upon architects, urbanists, artists, and environmentalists to imagine how Helsinki and the South Harbor site allotted to the proposed museum can be transformed for the maximum benefit of the city’s residents and visitors. Kong's entry to the competition has been recognized by the jury panel, which is chaired by architect Michael Sorkin. The jury shortlisted the eight entries they deemed as outstanding ideas out of more than 200 entries from 37 countries, and Kong’s entry was selected among these. Designed in collaboration with Susan Seah, the proposal explores how city life, art, new social institutions and community engagement could be developed and strengthened by reconceptualizing the urban museum experience along the city's tram lines. All submissions have been published on the competition website, and the Next Helsinki plans to mount exhibitions and create publications of the entries.
