Performance of SAIC alum Colin Self (BFA 2011) featured in The Guardian
This fall Theaster Gates (HON 2014) hosted Sanctum, a 24-hour, 24-day schedule of performances in Bristol, England. The performances were held on the stage of a commissioned structure Gates built within the crumbling walls of a temple destroyed in the World War II bombing of Great Britain. His lineup of acts included a performance by SAIC alum Colin Self (BFA 2011). The Guardian featured a review that discussed the work: “accompanied only by a laptop, some rubber masks and a great deal of amplification, [they] nearly wrecked the place. Self thrashed about on the floor, wailed, screamed, wrestled a folding chair and nearly stabbed themself with a pair of knives…A thrashing corrective to perfectionism, Self doesn’t correct anything.” Self is a musician, DJ, video artist, activist, and member of the drag artist group, Chez Deep.
