Art in America Reviews Recent Ray Yoshida Exhibition
A recent exhibition of influential faculty member Ray Yoshida's (BFA 1953) art at David Nolan New York offers a different view of Yoshida's own artwork, which has long been overshadowed by his distinguished teaching legacy. The exhibition shows the work of his students, Karl Wirsum (BA 1966), Jim Nutt (DIP 1965, BFA 1967), and Christina Ramberg (BA 1968, MFA 1973) in a back room while Yoshida's collages, drawings, and paintings from the late 1960s and early 1970s filled the main gallery. A review in Art in America describes his teaching and art style, saying "In keeping with his teaching philosophy, Yoshida did not directly quote or copy any particular source, but synthesized diverse visual languages into a singular aesthetic."
