Artist, activist, and alum Tania Bruguera (MFA 2001, HON 2016) agreed to leave Cuba in exchange for the release of 25 prisoners who are incarcerated for protesting the current regime. The prisoners include artists, members of an anti-censorship collective, and youth detained during the summer’s protests. “This may be one of the first times in the history of Cuba that an activist negotiates the release of another activist,” shared Bruguera. “Generally, this is done between governments, but in this case we were the intermediaries.” The artist is also calling for the boycott of the 14th edition of the Havana Biennial—the island’s largest visual arts event—using the hashtag #ImmoralBiennial.
