Recent Past Survey Developments

Since 2006, the Historic Preservation Department at SAIC has partnered with Landmarks Illinois in a comprehensive survey of recent past, non-residential resources of Suburban Cook County. Begun under Jim Peters and continued by Eiliesh Tuffy and Charlie Pipal, the survey catalogues a largely unheralded collection of buildings, monuments, signs and structures which are vanishing from our landscape and collective memory.

Discoveries of these treasures continue. Two such recent standouts are from 1961: the First Lutheran Church of Harvey (Stade, Dolan and Anderson) and the Hazel Crest Community United Methodist Church (architect not yet known). The similarities in design attributes, materials and spatial qualities would indicate that both are the work of the same Park Ridge firm. This important work of identifying, cataloguing and posting these buildings online continues. One year remains before this survey concludes. For more information or to search the communities documented, visit Landmarks Illinois.
