Alum and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul (MFA 1998, HON 2011) was recently featured in The New Yorker. The profile examines his career as a filmmaker and artist, diving into specific works such as Blissfully Yours (2002), Tropical Malady (2004), and his most recent feature-length film Memoria (2021) starring Tilda Swinton. Additionally, Weerasethakul discusses his upbringing in Thailand and his experience as a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “[SAIC] was a shock of many things–of freedom,” Weerasethakul said of his time at SAIC. “This freedom, this lightness, is really heavy, because you can get lost. This place forced me to actually find a way to find myself.”
