Alum Selva Aparicio Awarded The 2025 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise
By Sophia Carmen Salganicoff
School of the Art Institute of Chicago alum Selva Aparicio (BFA 2015) has been awarded the 2025 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Visual Arts. The award honors “outstanding immigrant professionals, and intellectual leaders whose work champions diversity in the United States.” Known for her interdisciplinary installations exploring memory, mourning, and temporality, Aparicio utilizes materials like cicada wings, oyster shells, and human cadavers. Her practice celebrates the cyclicity of the natural world and reflects an extended death ritual, honoring materials caught in physical and spiritual limbo. She is one of three recipients each awarded $50,000.
