Alum Diane Simpson Shows Latest Solo Exhibition at JTT Gallery

Five pieces of artwork are displayed in an exhibition room with white walls and a wooden floor. Gridded Window, a window-shaped outline gridded with steel bars hangs on a wall to the left. Roof Shape (Ise), a roof-shaped sculpture made of LDF, perforated aluminum, canvas, and crayon stands on the left of the exhibition room. To its right stands Two Point Enclosure, a geometric sculpture made of LDF, canvas, stain, paint, and colored pencil. Bannister (Vienna), a sculpture shaped like a staircase banister, stands on the right side of the exhibit. On the wall to the right hangs Dormer, a curved, geometric sculpture made of LDF and canvas with an oval cutout.

For her latest solo exhibition at JTT Gallery, Point of View, alum Diane Simpson (MFA 1978) draws influence from many architectural sources as well as her own collection of photographs and drawings. Installed on September 9, Point of View features 11 sculptures and four drawings in total. A recent review from Hyperallergic describes Simpson’s work as “deeply moving … she shows us that there is another possibility [within] a world delighted and entertained by displays of material excess.”
