Looking Back on Make Way

What truly helps a student succeed? During their education, of course, but also after, when they leave campus and enter the professional world?

These questions were the spark for Make Way: A Roadmap to Student Access, Equity, and Affordability, a fundraising campaign led by School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) President Emerit Elissa Tenny, who concluded her tenure this summer. Though the answers to these questions are complex, the campaign centered on three critical areas of support: scholarships, wellness, and career preparedness. The resonance of each is clear: by the campaign’s end this past July, it had raised a staggering $27 million, 108 percent over its goal.

“As a donor, I am so proud our family can extend an SAIC education to students for whom an art and design education is both more difficult to access and more challenging to complete.”

Anita Sinha, Member, SAIC Board of Governors

SAIC’s generous community of supporters made this monumental achievement possible. Their gifts have made the dream of attending SAIC a reality for many students who need scholarship support. They funded internship stipends and expanded health, counseling, and disability learning services. Hundreds of students have already benefited from these programs and initiatives—a clear reminder of what’s possible when we work together to support our community.

“I deeply appreciate SAIC’s support for disability arts and culture. It has been pivotal in my journey as an artist.”

Yimei Zhou (MFA 2023)

The success of Make Way ensures that SAIC is not only accessible to artists, designers, and scholars, but that it provides a welcoming, supportive home to all once they arrive on campus. This impact will be felt for generations, empowering countless students to thrive at SAIC and beyond.
